About the University of Northern Iowa

University of Northern Iowa

With 12,900 students UNI is an ideal size, our class sizes are small and students will benefit from our favorable faculty-to-student ratio. UNI has over 220 student organizations with academic, social, pre-professional, religious, and athletic interests. Some examples include: Ethnic Student Promoters, Black Male Leaders Union, Hispanic/Latino Student Union (just to name a few) and fraternities and sororities. Campus facilities like the Wellness and Recreations Center, UNI-Dome, McLeod Center and Gallagher Bluedorn Performing Arts Center (GBPAC) are popular places to go because they’re among the best of their kind anywhere. UNI students get into all home athletic events free and receive discounted tickets to performances at GBPAC. UNI has several funding sources available to our students. There are departmental scholarship available based on academic majors as well as several scholarships and grants available for our multicultural students. We have academic majors available for both our decided and undecided students to help them achieve academic success. UNI offers opportunities for internships, co-ops, and research as an undergraduate student along with pre-professional and graduate programs. We also off exciting opportunities for students to study abroad, or to be an exchange student at a partnering school within the United States, Canada, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico. Our most popular majors at UNI are Education, Business (including Marketing, Accounting, MIS, Management, Real Estate, Finance, and Business Teaching), Psychology, Biology (Bio-Medical), and Deciding (Undecided), but with 120 majors to choose from, we have something for everyone!

Living in one of UNI’s nine residence halls gives students the best combination of convenience, low cost, security, opportunities for involvement and great food. We also have Panther Picks which can help you find a compatible roommate to enhance your housing experience. UNI has excellent resources to help students succeed on our campus. Our Academic Learning Center is home to our Math Center, Reading and Learning Center, Writing Center and Examination Services all of which our free and open to all students. We also have Student Support Services which is a federally funding TRIO program which helps 200 students with advising, career services, college survival and study skill workshops. We also have a mentoring program called Gaining Panther Success (GPS). This program is designed to provide new students with mentors who they can call on for issues both in and out of the classroom. The link is: http://www.uni.edu/cme/programs/gps.htm. This program is housed in our Center for Multicultural Education which works to promote diversity on campus by sponsoring speakers, a book club, trips, and other initiatives.
Jumpstart is our week long orientation program for students from underrepresented populations. These students move to campus one week early to learn about UNI’s on campus resources, network with multicultural faculty and staff, and meet with other multicultural students on campus. Jumpstart participants are placed in learning communities so they can have some familiar faces in their courses and are clustered in the various dorms around campus as well. Sessions cover topics such as safety on campus, library resources, money management, and an involvement fair. The link is: http://www.uni.edu/admissions/orientation/jumpstart.html
